Update iTunes for iOS5

itunes update for ios5 - automatic message

As a PART 2 to the earlier tutorial today about updating your iPad/iPhone apps for iOS5 readiness, I thought I’d also do a quick runthrough of how to make sure your iTunes software on your computer is also updated and ready to go for iOS5.

Because your iOS5 update will be done by connecting and syncing your iPad/iPhone to your computer with iTunes, it’s important to make sure your iTunes is ready to go too. The iTunes update is super easy, and will take only a few minutes.

Note: The following tutorial is on a MAC laptop but it shouldn’t be too different on a PC.

1. This morning, when I woke up and opened iTunes, this message came up on my screen:

itunes update for ios5 - automatic message

Click on DOWNLOAD, of course!

2. If you don’t see this message, you can also manually get it by clicking on iTunes, and Check for Updates as shown below.

(On a PC, you’d click on File and Check for Updates).

manually check for itunes updates

And you’d get the same message as before:

new version of itunes (10.5) is available.

3. Click on Download iTunes. On a MAC, the following window appears:

new software updates available on macbookpro

here you can see the software update details

Click on install.

4. You then watch the update download – which shouldn’t take very long at all (mine took 2 minutes.)

watch the update happen!

The window where the update happens changed to this because I still had iTunes open:

close itunes before updating

I simply clicked on Close Applications and Install.

And the update kept going.

I kept watching until it changed to this:

Itunes update installed successfully

SUCCESS IS SWEET!

SUCCESS, as you can see above!

The next time you open iTunes, you’ll see this message:

itunes terms and conditions accept

Simply click AGREE.

Congratulations, your iTunes has now been updated, and you can now go on to get iOS5 as soon as it becomes available!

(PS, if you missed the tutorial on updating your apps on your iPad/iPhone, please check it out too!)

iphone app: hoyts

On Saturday night, on a whim, S and I decided to go watch a movie. We were, for various reasons, trying to kill time out in the Eastern suburbs, which we weren’t so familiar with, and were tossing up between having dinner somewhere or watching a movie, or going to a bar for a drink.

As S drove around in the general direction of civilisation (we hoped), I googled “Eastland cinema”, and the Hoyts iPhone app popped up.

Hmm, I thought. Intriguing.

And promptly, of course, went to the App Store and downloaded it.

And was duly impressed.

Truly.

The Hoyts iPhone App delivered quite the user experience – in 3 minutes flat, I worked out how to use it, picked our movie, and selected our tickets. It’s user-interface is wonderfully simple and slick looking, and I love that it’s extremely fast to load each page.

simple, pretty interface

You can search by Movies or Cinema, and once you do, buying a ticket is just about 2 taps away. You can choose your seat easily, and that’s that.

Then, you simply enter your credit card details, and the receipt is stored in your “Purchases” section. You don’t need to have an account, register, or sign in (though if you have a Hoyts account, you can use it on this app too), which means a hassle-free transaction.

I think this was one of the major selling points for me – if you give your customers an easy, clear path to purchasing, chances are, they will buy more easily and happily and impulsively. Which is kind of what happened to us. I went from “maybe we should watch a movie” to “I bought tickets!” before S had even left the next set of traffic lights.

Within seconds, the barcode was sent to me and all I had to do when we rocked up at Eastland Hoyts was display my purchase barcode to the nice lady at the counter. She scanned it, and BOOM, we were in.

It actually was harder and took longer to find the right carpark to park in at Eastland.

So there you go. If you’re a movie aficionado, you need this app – it has definitely endeared me to Hoyts, and it certainly helped that their La Premiere experience was pretty damn good too. Plus, the app is free. What more do you need in life? :)
