Awesome World Atlas iPad App

I found this fantastic iPad app the other day that I suspect is meant to be for educatins children, but I (clearly a young at heart adult) am absolutely hooked!

It’s called the Barefoot World Atlas, and is basically an interactive way to view all the different countries and areas in the world.

When the app starts, you see a globe that zooms in and out with the usual simple pinch gestures you’re already used to in your iPad and iPhone.

It’s a gorgeous visual rendition of terrain, land size, but also has cute little graphics of what the particular country you’re looking at is famous for.

Tapping on a country’s name will bring up a list of its vital stats for your perusal.

You can also tap on the cute pictures – tapping on the African elephant told me all about elephants native to Africa and their endangerment species status. Tapping on the rugby player told me that rugby is Africa’s national spot! Things I never knew!

You can also view a straight up list of countries, and tap on its name to be taken straight there on the map.

OR you can also view a list of featured items (or what I call the list of cute pictures).

All in all, I think it’s a basic app that does what it says well. It provides good information such as demographics, flags, land size and capital cities, is a fun and colorful way to view what can otherwise be pretty dry information, and is a good educational tool for kids or geographically challenged adults like me to have a bit of fun whilst learning more about the world we live in.

Cool iPad Stylus by Studio Neat

Most of you already know that you can purchase affordable iPad styluses from me for just $15 (including postage & handling).

I caught sight of these a couple of days ago, though, and if you’re willing to spend a little bit more, they seem like a great product too! With an extra wide-grip, this is great for Seniors, who may have arthritis or conditions that make slim pen-styluses a little bit more arduous to hold easily.

Update iTunes for iOS5

itunes update for ios5 - automatic message

As a PART 2 to the earlier tutorial today about updating your iPad/iPhone apps for iOS5 readiness, I thought I’d also do a quick runthrough of how to make sure your iTunes software on your computer is also updated and ready to go for iOS5.

Because your iOS5 update will be done by connecting and syncing your iPad/iPhone to your computer with iTunes, it’s important to make sure your iTunes is ready to go too. The iTunes update is super easy, and will take only a few minutes.

Note: The following tutorial is on a MAC laptop but it shouldn’t be too different on a PC.

1. This morning, when I woke up and opened iTunes, this message came up on my screen:

itunes update for ios5 - automatic message

Click on DOWNLOAD, of course!

2. If you don’t see this message, you can also manually get it by clicking on iTunes, and Check for Updates as shown below.

(On a PC, you’d click on File and Check for Updates).

manually check for itunes updates

And you’d get the same message as before:

new version of itunes (10.5) is available.

3. Click on Download iTunes. On a MAC, the following window appears:

new software updates available on macbookpro

here you can see the software update details

Click on install.

4. You then watch the update download – which shouldn’t take very long at all (mine took 2 minutes.)

watch the update happen!

The window where the update happens changed to this because I still had iTunes open:

close itunes before updating

I simply clicked on Close Applications and Install.

And the update kept going.

I kept watching until it changed to this:

Itunes update installed successfully

SUCCESS IS SWEET!

SUCCESS, as you can see above!

The next time you open iTunes, you’ll see this message:

itunes terms and conditions accept

Simply click AGREE.

Congratulations, your iTunes has now been updated, and you can now go on to get iOS5 as soon as it becomes available!

(PS, if you missed the tutorial on updating your apps on your iPad/iPhone, please check it out too!)
